How to turn tables faster, without making anyone feel rushed
The time you can win back is almost never while people are eating. It hides in the gaps: the wait for a first hello, the wait for the check, and the minutes a dirty table sits empty while a party stands at the door.
Attack the gaps, not the meal
A typical turn has three parts: from seated to first staff visit, the meal itself, and from guests leaving to the table being ready again. Guests own the middle part, and trying to shrink it reads as pressure and costs you regulars. The first and last parts belong entirely to you, and most floors are leaking four to ten minutes in each without anyone deciding to.
Those edge minutes are also the cheapest to fix. No menu changes, no discounts, no extra headcount: just making the gaps visible and giving each one an owner.
Five habits that shorten turns
- Set a greet window and say it out loud. Pick a number, say two minutes to water and a hello, and announce it at pre-shift. What gets named gets noticed.
- Drop the check with the dessert decision. Once the table has said no to dessert, the check should already be moving. Waiting to be asked for it adds minutes to every single turn.
- Clear as you go. If plates leave during the meal, the final clear is a two-minute job instead of a six-minute one.
- Stage reset kits. A caddy per station with roll-ups, condiments and wipes beats three trips to the back.
- Give every empty-dirty table an owner. The table nobody resets is the table everybody assumed someone else had.
Measure two numbers before you change anything
You only need a stopwatch and one busy night. Time ten first greets, door to hello, and ten resets, last guest up to table ready. Write down the worst ones, not the average: the worst ones are where the money went. Run the same count two weeks after your changes and you have a before and after any manager can defend.
If you want to put a money figure on the minutes first, the calculator on our home page does the arithmetic with your own table count and average check.
What TableWave automates
Everything above works with a clipboard. TableWave does the watching and the timing for you, using the CCTV cameras already on your ceiling: every table shows available, occupied, needs attention, needs cleaning or reserved on a host screen, each with a running clock. When a table crosses your greet or reset threshold, it buzzes the one person who covers it, and the alert closes itself when they arrive. It runs on a computer inside your restaurant, keeps working when the internet drops, and the video never leaves the building.
Plans and setup fees are on the pricing page, and you can book a 30-day pilot that ends with a payback report measured on your own floor.
Questions owners ask
Does turning tables faster annoy guests?
Not if you only cut the waiting they never wanted: a faster hello, a check that arrives when they ask, a clean table when they walk in. Guests notice slow service far more than efficient service. The line to never cross is pushing people out mid-meal.
What is a realistic improvement?
It depends on where you start, which is why we refuse to promise a number. Measure your own greet and reset times for a week; floors that have never timed them usually find several minutes per turn in the edges. Your payback report shows what actually moved.
Do I need new hardware for any of this?
The manual version needs a stopwatch. TableWave needs the cameras you already have and one computer in the building: yours if it passes our check, or our box, included in setup, if it doesn’t.
How fast do changes show up?
Greet and reset habits change within a few shifts once people can see the clock. In a TableWave pilot, week one measures your baseline quietly and week two runs with alerts on, so by day 14 you have a side-by-side comparison.
Prove it on your own floor
The 30-day pilot is paid, on purpose: you cover your plan’s setup fee, we install in person, and you read your own payback report before any monthly billing starts.
The install is $1,500. If it earns its keep in 30 days, your first month’s on us. If it doesn’t, we take it out and you owe nothing more.
Prices in USD, before tax. Setup is non-refundable once installed; monthly starts only if you continue.
